I saved this Caldecott Award winning book for the last week of school and I'm so happy I did! We had very hot weather and we all wanted to imagine ourselves at the beach. Flotsam brings us to the beach and it's really about the amazing things you'll see if you REALLY look. The young man in the story becomes sidetracked with a camera that washes up on the shore and the camera leads him to views of the ocean depths that he never imagined. We identified some of the ocean creatures and we visited the Monterey Bay Acquarium where we saw short videos of marine creatures. We saw barnacles waving their appendages in the air, and sea anemones eating lunch!
Did I mention that the pictures tell the story? No words! This is a book for everyone.
Take a close look at the barnacles grabbing their breakfast!
Dear Mrs. Riesenfeld,
ReplyDeleteFlotsam is fabulous! Both the story and the illustrations are so imaginative. The book is an interesting blend of reality and fantasy. Every time that I go through the book I discover something new.I plan to share Flotsam with my students.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bazin
