This is a story told through drawing and text to inspire middle school students as well as their parents. The Invention of Hugo Cabret is a blend of magic, mystery, and old time movies all wrapped up in an intriguing story of a boy who lives in the subways of Paris. Hugo, and his resourceful sidekick Isabelle, conspire to solve the mystery of the origin of an automaton who holds secrets of great interest to both of them.

<BlogItemURL>
See the Maillardet Automaton at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.
</BlogItemURL>

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Du0wliDTkhM/SJpAxhpINHI/AAAAAAAAAAU/qizJNSvumFI/s320/thelightningthief.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231565136732894322" />

What an exciting meeting of fantasy and mythology! We had very hot weather and we all wanted to imagine ourselves at the beach. Flotsam brings us to the beach and it's really about the amazing things you'll see if you REALLY look. The young man in the story becomes sidetracked with a camera that washes up on the shore and the camera leads him to views of the ocean depths that he never imagined. We identified some of the ocean creatures and we visited the Monterey Bay Acquarium where we saw short videos of marine creatures. We saw barnacles waving their appendages in the air, and sea anemones eating lunch!

Did I mention that the pictures tell the story? No words!
